John Morgan was born on August 18, 1909 in Rome, GA the middle of five sons. His father worked as a coal miner.

John completed a grammar school education in Alabama and/or Ohio, and by 1930, he was living with his wife, Luella, and their infant son, John Jr., in Painesville, OH, and working as an operator at the Standard Portland Cement division of the Diamond Alkali Company. Daughter Jeannette joined the family a couple of years later. A third child, Charles, died in infancy.

When he registered for the draft, on October 16, 1940, he and his family were still living in Painesville. But by the time he enlisted, on June 17, 1943, he and Luella had divorced. He was still at Standard Portland Cement, and his occupation was listed in the category of semiskilled cranemen, derrickmen, hoistmen, and shovelmen.

John was assigned to the 603rd Engineer Camouflage Battalion, and saw service in Europe during the war. He was discharged from the Army on November 3, 1945 with the rank of PFC.

After he returned from Europe, John went back to work at the cement company, and married a woman named Anne who brought two daughters to live with them.

John was a member of the VFW and the Disabled American War Veterans. He died, after a brief illness, on July 2, 1951 and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville, OH.
