"When we arrived at Ausweiler ... we put up 12-men squad tents ... that is where we spent almost a month. ... On May 22, my 22nd birthday, We left Briey to join the rest of the outfit which was then at Idar-Oberstein in Germany."

On June 20, having nothing better to do, the outfit took us for a little trip to Rouen ... Having no French money, I couldn't buy any souvenirs, and had to be content with taking two pictures."

"At 3:30 in the morning of June 22, 1945, we finally left Camp 20 Grand for Le Havre. We arrived there and immediately boarded our ship ... Shipboard life was just about the same as going over, except that we had three meals a day, no submarine scares, and less interference by the officers. I was just as sick, though!"

"On July 2, 1945, at 6:40 A.M. I caught my first sight of the U.S.A.! I was home! We pulled into Newport News, Virginia ... from the dock we took a train for Camp Patrick Henry and got there at 1:55."

"We arrived at Fort Dix on July 4 at 8:35 A.M. after an all night trip ... on July 5 we left Fort Dix for home. I arrived home at 9:45 P.M. for a long, 30 day furlough! Boy, it was swell to see the folks after more than a year!"

"The furlough passed all too quickly, and on August 6 I reported back to Fort Dix. I arrived there at 7:30 P.M. The next day, August 7, at 8:30 P.M. I left Fort Dix for Pine Camp, N.Y. to join the rest of the outfit."
